How we rate

Robust, Comprehensive, Led By Sustainability Experts

We comprehensively aggregate transparent information about fashion and beauty sustainability—up to 1,000 points across more than 100 key issues. Then we assess brands using our leading methodology developed by a diverse range of experts.

Rating fashion and beauty brands on industry-recognised best practices

Comprehensive

Assessing key issues across the value chain

Good On You rates brands on issues across the entire supply chain, from raw fibres and climate impacts to worker empowerment and circularity. Materiality is central to our methodology, which we’ve developed in consultation with industry experts and organisations. That means we assess and weight issues based on alignment with widely accepted good practices.
Transparent

Aggregating all the credible public data

Transparent data is crucial in educating consumers, helping to shape industry regulation, and promoting accountability. That’s why we only use public data—our analysts use our proprietary tech to aggregate and verify published data from the most credible sources, including the best certification schemes, standards, independent assessments, and brands’ own reporting. User driven

All the values consumers care about

Better consumer choices are driven by clear communication. Our easy-to-use rating system with a simple five-point score makes comprehensive brand assessments available to anyone. In addition, Good On You’s value labels recognise brand performance on key consumer issues such as organic, vegan, Fairtrade, and circularity.
rating pillars

A 360-degree view of brands’ impacts

We assess brands based on three key pillars: the planet, people, and animals. When we evaluate a brand, we take into account its size and the impact it has. This allows us to apply our methodology in a way that reflects the relative impact of small and large brands and their potential for change.
Planet
We assess a wide range of environmental issues, including resource use and waste management (eg fabrics, ingredients, circularity, business models, microplastics, deforestation, biodiversity, product durability, and end-of-life impacts), climate and water impacts, chemical use and disposal, and more.
People
We assess brands’ impact on workers across the supply chain. This includes policies and practices on child labour, modern slavery, worker safety, freedom of association (ie the right to join a union), gender equality, diversity and inclusion, and living wages.
Animals
We rate brands’ animal welfare policies and, when applicable, how well they trace their animal-derived products. We identify and mark down brands that use fur, angora, and “exotic” animal skins and hairs. We consider whether and how the brand uses wool, leather, down, and other animal-derived products.
RATING SCALE

A simple scale that makes complex data accessible

Brands receive an overall rating on a clear and comparable five-point scale—based on their average scores for people, the planet, and animals.

We synthesise the complexity of reliable, credible sustainability analysis into a simple, transparent rating system that facilitates consumer choice without obscuring a robust foundation.
